Hello all;

I'm a newbie to Linux and have several questions, so please bear
with me.

I have a PowerMac 9500 that I've installed YDL 2.0 (dual boot w/
MacOS 9.0.4 soon to be upgraded to 9.1). After some initial trouble
in getting X to run, I was able to get it running ok.

However, there seems to be a problem with the refresh & the mouse
pointer on the screen. The pointer has two vertical lines, 1 pixel
wide, to either side of the pointer (one on the left side, one on
the right). When I move the pointer, the lines get painted onto the
desktop - sometimes 1 pixel wide, sometimes many pixels (making a
stripe) - of color & pattern that is in contrast to what is on the
desktop. Any ideas of how to get this cleared up?

(Video card is a Mach64 model 88800GX, monitor is Apple Multisync
14", mouse is Apple ADB mouse.)

Second, how do I go about installing things like Emacs? Or switch
desktop environments from KDE to Gnome or IceWM? Am I correct in
assuming that I should read up on Red Hat to figure out how to
go about installing packages? (This is going to be for home use only,
not a server or multiperson workstation - I figured that it was high
time that I play around w/ Linux.)

A more generic Mac question. I'm in the process of building a PC for
my wife which will be running Linux. Whichever motherboard I get is
going to have the ATA/EIDE drive controller on it, so I won't need
to use the Maxtor PCI ATA/EIDE card that I've picked up. I was wondering
if I can use it in the Mac 9500 and install a 10+ GB IDE drive? (A lot
cheaper than getting a SCSI drive, even off eBay.) If I can, do I
set the drive to be a Master or Slave? How will that effect the two
internal SCSI drives or will there be no conflict and the drive will
just show up, ready to be initialized?

I'm sure that I will have more questions when/if I decide to install
YDL on my Powerbook G3 (Lombard).

Thanks!
