2.2.19, PPP problem

I just upgraded from kernel 2.2.17 to 2.2.19 on my Lombard
Powerbook. In building my new kernel, I made CONFIG_MAC_SERIAL
a module rather than compiled in. When I try to initiate a PPP
        connection, I get:

kernel: PPP: ppp line discipline successfully unregistered
kernel: CSLIP: code copyright 1989 Regents of the University of California
kernel: PPP: version 2.3.7 (demand dialling)
kernel: PPP line discipline registered.
kernel: registered device ppp0
pppd[22158]: pppd 2.3.11 started by root, uid 0
pppd: pppd startup succeeded
kernel: Serial driver version 4.27 with no serial options enabled
chat[22161]: Can't get terminal parameters: Input/output error
pppd[22158]: Connect script failed
pppd[22158]: Exit.

Any idea why I'm getting "Input/output error?" Do I now need to
        add something to /etc/modules.conf?
