Hi Robert,
I am still using 2.2.19 on a 9600.
Here is what I think you should look for:
Under /lib/modules/<kernel version>/net
look for 3c59x.o which is the compiled driver for this card.
Then I added a line to modules.conf in "/etc" as follow:
alias eth1 3c59x
no need for the ".o" after driver, eth1 is my second card since eth0 is the
internal one.
