It sounds like this is "Headless Mac" syndrome. Macintoshes will boot
without a monitor connected, but they also cut the video signal entirely, so
controlling the Mac with something like Timbuktu is usually not possible.

This link is for this little adapter made by Dr. Bott that allows a headless
Mac to boot with a video signal, so you can control it remotely. It also
opens up all resolutions for your system (what I have used it for).
