Are you sure the sound modules are loaded? do you get the system beeps?
sounds like you need to insmod dmasound_core and dmasound_pmac

Hi everybody,
I've searched the site and the lists, but I can't find something I know I
saw before. YDL 2.0 is up and running fine on my G4/400 AGP. I get a sound
at boot, but nothing after the OS loads. I'm pretty sure it's not a volume
setting.
