So, Bottom Line is I'm Now up on 2.4.7 on a Blue G3. sources direct from
us.kernel.org, munged 2.2.19 make menuconfig output for 2.2.7

Only two problems - ppp and sound

X works
KDE works
Emacs works
KPPP works but pppd dies

Is an update to pppd in order for kernel 2.4.7 or is it some configuration
thing?

Here's the module list
The reason can be seen below in messages. something's amis with ppp.
running modprobe doesn't fix it.
