I also had problems with xmms recently. I found that only root was able to run
 the program in Xwindows and have it show up. I was able to fix it by
reconfiguring Xwindows with Xconfigurator. After I set it to use 32 bit
color...it ran for everyone again. I thought it was REALLY weird.
Anyway....it works now.
