Subject: Installation problem: mouse

Attempting to upgrade a flawless CS 1.1 to 1.2, via fresh install as
recommended, on a beige G3 Rev 1 with Kensington TurboMouse.
The installer tells me the mouse configuration fails; consequently (I
think) X configuration fails.
Boots fine into the console; attempts to run mouseconfig results in
segmentation fault; startx returns a message that the XF86Config file
is nowhere to be found.
Reinstalling (with varied packages) produces the same result;
reinstalling the various rpms individually is no help, nor is
linuxconf. What should I try next?
