This is not necessarily the correct "linux" approach to your problem, so I
took it off-line.

Did you consider taking the drive out of the Laptop and jumpering it as a
slave and putting it into the newer machine (temporarily).
After the install to the new machine is complete just set-up some mount
points to the second drive and copy the info off it that you need.
I was thinking this may be a simple approach since you don't know what is
wrong with the original system.

You will need to know what your mount points were in the old machine,
since you will be specifying in /dev/hdbxx form in the mount commands.
If you can remember that this should work.
