Folks,

To clarify, my comments should not be interpreted as a flame towards YDL.
(As Iain had interpreted them.) I do feel that it's reasonable that they
notify users at the time of purchase that it's not currently possible to
upgrade.

Chris Ruprecht pointed out that paying yet another $40 won't kill me, and
he's right. But it sure will cut down my monthly grocery budget by 40%. I
find that it's best not to make financial assumptions about others.

Several people suggested a backup, a partition-wiping, and a re-install.
I've got this installed on an iMac. Backing up, for me, consists of making
a multi-gig tarball, FTPing it laboriously to a server that has ample space
and bandwidth, wiping, installing, and then repeating the above process,
backwards. Except that it's not even *that* easy, because my iMac Rev. A
has a 4GB drive, hardly sufficient space to support two YDL installs. So I
have to have space on the remote machine to extract various configuration
files, the GB of so of IMAP mail folders, recompress them and download them.
Not practical for me.

If I were running a Serious Server(tm), yes, simply upgrading would be a bad
way of doing things. But this machine is a community mailing server and a
host of website for local non-profits and for friends. So those of you that
point out that it's unprofessional to upgrade without first testing on a
beta server, back up thoroughly, etc...you're right, but that's not
realistic for many of us part-time just-for-kicks sysops.

I am not criticizing YDL for failing to release an upgradeable version.
It's a .0 release, such things happen. I'm criticizing them for failing to
notify customers (as of the time of this message) that the new release may
not be usable to them. This is a simple and logical disclosure, one that I
think they're obliged to make to their return customers.

Best,
Waldo
