I personally found Linux for Dummies and SAMS "Teach Yourself Linux" to
be useful...once. Then they're basically throwaways/doorstops/monitor
stands.

I think almost everyone would agree that "Running Linux" by Matt Welsh
is essential reading. After that, you'll find various recommendations.
Besides wading through the man pages and searching the list archives, my
bookshelf also contains;

"A Practical Guide to Linux" by Mark G. Sobell. A bit dated, but still a
decent beginner's reference.
"Linux in a Nutshell," which was already mentioned.
"Linux Desktop Reference" by Scott Hawkins. This one is organized kinda
strange, but really great for quick and dirty "how do I do..."
questions.

I've looked everywhere for a decent 'teach yourself Linux' book for
some
friends, and I have yet to find anything decent. I suggest getting a
copy
of O'Reilly's 'Linux in a Nutshell' to start off and just hack away.
This
way you'll at least have a list of commonly used commands, which is a
good
starting point. Not the most ideal but you'll learn a lot. Also, check
out
www.linuxdoc.org. There is a lot of good stuff there (though often not
so
easy to find).
