Note btw that identd and inetd are not the same thing at all.

identd is a server that handes the IDENT protocol, which is probably a
good thing not to run at all (although anyone who knows otherwise should
chime in about why it's a good thing).

inetd is a server that handles IP connections in general, based on the
inetd.conf file; specifically, for servers that don't handle their own
network connections. Services like telnet, FTP, POP, and IMAP are often
run out of inetd. Any services that you don't need to run, you should them
turn off in inetd.conf. xinetd is a more modern version of inetd, and if
you need to run any inetd-based services, it's probably a better choice
than the original inetd.
