Scott,

Here is a possibility for you that I temporarily used when I had messed up some *dm
files. Permanently have the machine to boot into init level 3. Then put `startx'
in your .bash_profile startup file (assuming you use bash). Together with your
.xinitrc changes, this has the effect of using the nongraphical level 3 type login
as a (limited) *dm, that starts X automatically. You then don't have to go to init
5 then down to init 3, then up to X, etc., which I agree is a bit clunky. However,
you won't have a pretty login screen, which typically isn't missed over time.

If space isn't an issue, leave the gnome and kde rpms there. You never know what
you'll learn or find useful by having these programs around. There is no reason to
remove them to accomplish what you are tryng to, in regards to login configuration.
