sorry for the broad topic. i wasn't sure if seperate emails were proper,
or
just combining them all into one, so i opted for this. anyways...

going slightly crazy trying to reach my goal of having
apache/php4/mysql running on my 7500. here are some current
problems

finally managed to get ydl 2.0 (internet server package) running. tried to
mount the source cd. worked fine on my powercomputing, just typed
mount /mnt/cdrom

tried the same on the 7500 and saw everything but the contents of
SRPMS, it was all gibberish. i even removed it and tried
mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
same gibberish. any ideas??

so, on to proftpd. i figure i'll just ftp the rpms i need to the 7500. i edited
the conf files in /etc/xinetd.d/ to disable = no for proftpd. works for telnet.
i even checked out hosts.allow and hosts.deny. i think i put myself in
hosts.allow and in ftpusers, no luck. fetch tells me the connection was
dropped, may be too busy. in the proftpd.conf file, it says it's part of
inetd, which i don't think is on ydl 20., so i changed it to standalone.
now, i tried a /usr/sbin/proftp start and i got a fatal: unable to determine
the IP address of 'localhost.pmac7500.com'. well, i put the
pmac7500.com in when i configured my network after i installed ydl 2
because i couldn't go any further without coming up with a domain
name. well, i've tried to remove this 'pmac7500.com' everywhere i could
find it, but i still get the same error. does anyone know where proftpd
gets this info? i'd restart my machine to re-read the conf files (i do a
restart on xinetd, but i'm sure thats not enough) but yet another strange
thing, my 7500 and my powercomputing won't boot into linux when
there is no moniter connected, so i have to connect a moniter everytime
i restart. i checked the box not to load a video driver on bootx, same
hing happens.

now, on to my apple networking question. with linuxppc2000, i could
open up my network browser on my G4 and i could access my linux
box. i don't know what daemon was taking care of this, but it doesn't
work with ydl2.0. probably answering my own question, but does
anyone know what daemon takes care of this? maybe if i can ever get
any rpm's onto the machine i'll install it.

sorry for such a long email. i just wanted to try and cover all the bases.
much thanks in advance - dave

dan, if you happen to read this, i did not succeed in installing ydl2.0 on
my 7500, i swapped hard drives and installed on the powercomputing.
worked, but now i can't get any rpms onto the 7500. and any other
package installs fail, so i can only get the internet server package.
