.. just a suggestion - I have had problems with XFree86 > 4.01 too.
Specifically, the Rage driver seems to have changed significantly and it is
now essential to include Option UseFBDev. Your best bet is to create a new
XF86Config-4 using Xautoconfig4 and then to compare the old and the new.
Change one thing at a time until you get a working setup.
