Paul,
Thanks that helps. Ok so I'll keep the name. In the /etc/hosts I have:
stavia localhost localhost.localdomain
/etc/HOSTNAME is just
stavia
and in /etc/sysconfig/network
HOSTNAME=stavia
Does this make sense? I'm having some trouble in that I can connect
now through straight telnet to other computers where I have accounts
but then once I do if I ping my IP address it isn't there. WHich
brings me to another question, how can I find out my IP address? How
did you set those IP addresses? I know these aren't YD specific but I
really want to make this work.
Thanks also to all the good suggestions to getting my own domain name.

From a machine's perspective, its hostname has NOTHING to do
with its IP address(es). A machine can have multiple IP
addresses. An IP address belongs to an ethernet interface, not
the machine as a whole. The laptop I'm trying this from has 3
IP addresses: 127.0.0.1, the one on the ethernet interface, and
the one on the wireless interface. Its hostname is "Powerbook"
and has never changed despite going through 3 ISPs, 3
employer's networks, and an internet cafe.
