I suspect that the /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0 file is not correct - did you
install the full YDL2 or just parts of it? It's possible that some of the
startup scripts needed to get the background setup for kdm have been erased.

Re-installing X and kdm from the rpms on the YDL disk should fix the
problem.
