I had a similar problem only that the configuration that I am using is not the Apple 17" LCD display but the 17" Apple Studio Display. I managed to solve the problem.

You can try to load the kernel adding the following "video=aty128fb:vmode:20"
For example, if you are loading the "install-gui" image, try by typing "install-gui video=aty128fb:vmode:20"

This will set the system to run at 1280x1024. Seems like the only resolution that will work with my 17" Display.

Give it a try to see if it works.

[this looks like a duplicate to kai far choong's problem]

Do these arguments also work for the apple 17" Lcd display? I've
tried several different approaches, but consistently the screen goes
black just after i get the messages:
Elf32 kernel loaded.
loading ramdisk

[black screen]

the install-text option is not listed in the <TAB> menu on the install
cd: I have

hd-install hd-install-novideo install
install-novideo install-gui cd-linux
cd-linux-novideo

I've tried using install, install-novideo, both with and without
the kernel commands listed below.

I ordered a cube with Cd-RW drive and a Rage 128 card (not the new Nvidia).
Is there a way to confirm that I've got the right video card?

i purchased support, but i thought to try this list to see if any other
users have had success.
