First make sure you provide the following in yaboot.conf:

 image = cd:,\\\\vmlinux
    label = install-novideo
    initrd = cd:,\\\\ramdisk.image.gz
    initrd-size=8192
    novideo

This is the info needed to install off the CD.

You can find the latest files you need from:
http://www.yellowdoglinux.com/support/bootfiles/

My newer powerbook would NOT work with the vmlinux provided. I had to get
the updated version- you may have to as well. You can find it at:

ftp://ftp.linuxberg.com/pub/distributions/Yellowdog/champion-1.2/updates/ins
tall/

Next, try this from open firmware- (forget the setenv command for a
minute...)

 boot hd:9,\\yaboot

Don't ask me why you only need two slashes instead of 4 but that's the way
it is. (yaboot MUST be in your system folder for this to work).
This should bring you to a boot screen from where you can choose an image.
You can hit the tab key to see your options, but you want to type:

 install-novideo

This will start the install process from the CD.

See if you can get this far and write back.
