I've tried all that you said, and when I go back into open firmware to try
to boot yaboot, it gives me the following:

0> boot hd:9,\\yaboot can't OPEN: hd:9,\\yaboot

As I have said, yaboot is in the systme folder, and hda9 is formated as HFS,
not HFS+, or more to the point, in OS 9's install "Standard" not "Extended".
It just doesn't seem like it can access that drive for some reason.

First make sure you provide the following in yaboot.conf:

 image = cd:,\\\\vmlinux
    label = install-novideo
    initrd = cd:,\\\\ramdisk.image.gz
    initrd-size=8192
    novideo

This is the info needed to install off the CD.

You can find the latest files you need from:
http://www.yellowdoglinux.com/support/bootfiles/

My newer powerbook would NOT work with the vmlinux provided. I had to get
the updated version- you may have to as well. You can find it at:

ftp://ftp.linuxberg.com/pub/distributions/Yellowdog/champion-1.2/updates/ins
tall/

Next, try this from open firmware- (forget the setenv command for a
minute...)

 boot hd:9,\\yaboot

Don't ask me why you only need two slashes instead of 4 but that's the way
it is. (yaboot MUST be in your system folder for this to work).
This should bring you to a boot screen from where you can choose an image.
You can hit the tab key to see your options, but you want to type:

 install-novideo

This will start the install process from the CD.

See if you can get this far and write back.
