 Control key? If you want to boot from the CD, you should be holding down
the 'c' key during bootup. Maybe this is your problem?

 Also, if you have an 8500, I would recommend at *least* OS8.6 (unless you
have a specific reason not to). 8.6 is when open transport became PPC
native (no more 68k code) along with a few other key things. FWIW, I have
a 6100 at home running OS 9.04 and IPNetRouter (no time to try to get a
Nubus linux installed on it) and it has been up and running since May.
