Subject: Video/Monitor depth

Is there a way from within X that you can access and change the depth that a
monitor is set to. I have a 17" display that worked fine before I updated to
2.2.18, but now only sets itself to 8 bit colour...
I'll check the video card settings, which appear to be new from the last version
of kernel.
