RAID migration - how can I shift filesystems over?

I've set up a software RAID 1 array and it mounts fine as /dev/md0. The
partition maps on the raid discs were set up using Apple's disc setup
utility and pdisk.

However, it seems that autodetect at boot does not work because I did not
use fdisk to do the partitioning of the raid discs and hence the kernel
autodetect parameter in the partition map is not set. Is there a
workaround for YDL for this that will enable me to boot from raid? I
haven't found a definitive answer in HOWTOs or mailing lists.

I could repartition using fdisk (although I'd be stuck for advice on this
too). However, one of the raid discs is larger than the other and has some
data in a separate partition that I want to keep - so repartitioning is a
bad idea. I don't want to lose the data. Would it be possible to continue
to boot from another non-raid disc but put most of the files on the raid
array? How would I do this?
