needed info: iMac mid-summer 2001 model, 500MHz, 192mb RAM running macOS 9.1
and YDL 2.0 ok, here's what i've done so far.

first thing i tried was to simply use kppp as it would be the easiest way to
check anything. all i got was "sorry, the modem is not responding".

sooo... i tried minicom. minicom could find the modem at /dev/ttyS0 but when
it sent the ATZ command, it would sit there and do nothing.

then i tried to do it to various ttyS*. all the way up to four. just for
kicks really... i didnt expect it to work.

i tried wvdial next. it sent the ATZ and after a few seconds, it came back
with "modem is not responding". at least it had the deceny to let me know ;)

then i figured i'd compile a new kernel. no go. same stuff. so i went to
ppckernel.org and got a specialized kernel just for my iMac. it said in the
description that it had sound and modem support which is really what i care
about most. i was more interested in the modem support. anyways, here's the
link:

http://www.ppckernel.org/kernel.php?id=22

i tried that out and when it booted up, the sound was staticy. if i moved
the mouse, a stream of static erupted from the speakers til i stopped it. i
tried the modem. i figure if the modem works, i could put up with crappy
sound (i was still able to play an mp3 to mask it).

i used wvdial because so far it's been the best contender out of the three.
it sent the ATZ and gotta response! a buncha stuff (no, i dont have it, ive
since formatted linux) i heard the modem click! my heart leaped for joy only
to have it's feet kicked out from underneath it right away. i still got "no
response from the modem".

sooo, i tried using the UNstable 2.4 kernel from the ppc site.

http://www.ppckernel.org/kernel.php?id=23

sound was even more staticy and when trying to ATZ the modem, i got
"input/output" error.

i really really want linux working with my modem. im crippled without the
internet! i work for an ISP!! i NEED the internet for daily use. i'm a long
time slack user and have no troubles getting my external modems and internal
ISA modems working in linux. no troubles at all. i've heard of people that
had the same problems that i've had with their iMac modems but none have
been able to help.

i'm at my wits end... can someone please help me??
