The sound does work. I have it working on a 500 Mhz IceBook. The problem
with supporting both airport and sound for the newer laptops out of the box
is that the distro came out just as the new models were coming out as well.
This obviously does not give any lead time to get a bleeding edge kernel out
for the 2.1 release. CD playing does not work because there is no direct
connection between the cd and the sound chipset. This is the same as a
situation on x86 where you do not connect that little cable from the back of
your cdrom drive to your sound card. I installed YDL 2.1 on a Pismo and
sound worked out of the box, it is a slightly older machine, and it had a
well supported, as of the 2.1 release, sound chipset. The only thing that I
needed to get the new kernel for on that machine was better airport support.
Other than that, if you have a iMac or a PowerMac, you should have no
problems. But as it stands now, I have a fully functional, sans good
Firewire support, but that is nominal, IceBook. So, I do see it as one of
the top choices. There obviously are some caveats with the new boxen, like
any other new hardware, but overall, support for this extremely specialized
and non-x86 hardware is extremely good. I would like to commend Terrasoft
for their hard work, and hopefully, 2.2, which you can now preorder, will
take into account these minor shortcomings. If any Terrasoft employees are
listening, may I suggest an installation option that allows you to choose
bleeding edge kernel for non-enterprise class machines like the IceBook and
a rock solid, non CVS or Bitkeeper version for the enterprise class
machines.

How can a setup where sound doesn't work (IceBook, YDL 2.1) be the "most
favored combination"? That's dumb. Even if you're savvy enough to be able to
get Ben's iBook kernel, it STILL doesn't work in KDE.

I've used RedHat 7.2 on a Dell laptop and everything just WORKED, which is
definitely not the case with Yellow Dog / PPC.

Just in case anyone didn't see this, there was an Ask Slashdot question
about what laptop to get if'n you're wanting to run linux. [Ti|Ice]Book +
YDl was one of the most favored combonations. Go YDL! I use YDL on my
Pismo and have actually started using it in preference to my Dell 420 at
home and Sawtooth at work.
