what a nice present in my mailbox when i got home. a big long off topic
thread :)

so, here's my take on it. running linux is like owning a vw bus. you have
to be part of the process. you have to _want_ to do it. i mean, you know
there's gonna be some scratched knuckles, so you might as well enjoy the
ride.

there are two kinds of people. folks looking for a reason to fail and folks
looking for a way to succeed.

here are two recent posts that demonstrate.

the first one went something like

"ydl sucks cause this doesn't work"
"oh, to fix that you need to go get these rpms and install them"
"i would but yup doesn't work"

this dude is looking for a reason to fail. you have to want to solve the
problem. when you come to a fork in the road, take it.

the other one goes

>>> i messed up yaboot.conf. how can i boot to fix the problem
>>>
>> stick the cd in the drive
>> boot the mac with the c key held down to boot off the CD
>> at the boot prompt type
>> cd-linux root=/dev/hda??
>>
>> replace ?? with your root partition number (you did write it down didn't
you?)
>
> Though if you didn't just start with 1 and keep incrementing it until it
works.

this dude is looking for a way to succeed. they're not gonna let one little
piece of the process keep them from achieving their goal.

the message i see here is to just do it. just because your situation isn't
exactly as described in the book, you have to try something. when you're on
the side of the road and your bus is broke down in the middle of nowhere,
(and like this is way before cell phones :) it's better to enjoy that next
adventure life is taking you on :)

besides, you meet nice people that way.
