You know, I'm gonna get accused of being a Pollyanna here, but when my DSL
went down, I patched my old 33.6 into /dev/ttyS0 on my Performa 6360 running
YDL-2.0 and had no route problems with kppp, is this just a 2.1 problem?

Hell yes it would be useful! Two things I can think of off the top of
my head are the yup problem and the you-have-to-get-rid-of-eth0-as-the-
default-route-before-you-can-get-anywhere-with-a-dialup-connection
problem.
