there may be faster, but are you sure it's better? speed isn't everything when ripping. by the way, you should distinguish between ripping (extracting audio tracks from the cd) and encoding (converting the audio file to mp3/ogg/whatever).

personally (and i don't know about the speed, i don't care about how fast it takes me to rip & encode, i care about quality) i have been using lame (with --r3mix preset) to encode and cdparanoia to rip (because it's damn good at it). i tie it all together with the script "abcde". what's nice is you can run multiple instances, have it start ripping and encoding a cd, when it's done ripping (but still encoding) it will eject and you can start ripping the next one. i rip a few cd's in an evening and let them encode the rest of the night.. should also mention abcde will lookup track info from cddb/freedb and write out id1/2 tags.

itunes is easy yeah, but i don't think it's very good as far as quality goes. you can check out <http://www.r3mix.net/> for some very good reading about mp3 quality.
