he wasn't telnet'ing to the telnet daemon, he was telnet'ing to the
sendmail deamon

 telnet localhost 25

this means connect to port 25 on localhost

i don't know about this. i run my firewalls on routers and run (x)inetd on
the servers themselves. it surprises me that a local firewall would
intercept traffic within the kernel though.

but then again, i'm a network guy and i run my firewalls on routers :)
