Automatic DSL startup problem

I've been trying to get my internet connection through my DSL to
startup automatically, but there appears to be some timing issues.
The commands that I run to start the service manually are:
/usr/local/bin/modem_run -v 1 -m -f /mgmt/mgmt.o
pppd call adsl

After I run the first command, it usually takes several seconds to
complete startup, which I only know is successful when I see the line
"ADSL goes up" and then get my command prompt again. If I try to run
the "pppd call adsl" before I get the reply that the link is up, it
gets all confused and refuses to start up. I believe this is what's
happening when I try to use the rc.d process to start by issuing
these commands. Is there an easier way for me to do maybe a shell
script that waits for the necessary reply before trying the second
command?

Thanks in advance for any help/pointers.
