first, you like alot of Apple hardware users have some misconceptions (I was
once one of them)- the machine I described is far from being an el cheapo
hardware box - that 4u rackmount case was 249.00USD alone - the single most
expensive componant, actually (but the black powder coat as well as the
brushed stainless steal handles are just too cool -I'm going to pick up some
2u or 3u boxes from the same manufactureer for my remaining Mac boxes - I
have a welder who is going to make a rack for them). ECC ram is fault
tolerant ram - the best, MB's which support it are not cheap MB's - all the
MB's supporting UW160 SCSI RAID (built in) are not cheap - they are 250.00
USD - Intel makes a nice processor, so to does AMD. IBM ultra star drives are
7200 RPM IDE and are excellent drives - they cost quite a bit more then the
drives Apple uses. Second - it was only the 3rd PC i have put together in my
life - it's easy, and yes, they did test the componants for me - they
installed the cpu's and set up the BIOS for me - I did do some tweaking for
Linux. They also tested the ram before it went in. Generalnano would be the
first to tell you the cheap stuff at compusa is exactly that. These machines
I have built are rock solid - the one prior to this one - a pure server
running one cpu cost 450.00 to build into a standard atx tower -512 megs of
ram- tyan MB - very very good - see "toms hardware guide".

Ok, I'll bite - I'll build you the system I described and install RH linux on
the box, and give you 90 days tech support (same as apple) for 2500.00 USD -
a full 1000.00 USD cheaper then Apple's comparable offering. Deal ? I
guarentee when you get the box, it will be up and running with out problems
in 10 minutes from the time you unpack it. or your money back - thats one
better then apple.
