Subject: sshd startup problems

trying to get sshd to start on its own... and it dies when i try to execute
./sshd start
with the error:

Generating SSH1 RSA host key: [FAILED]

any ideas on where to start on the troubleshooting?
i built openssl from src, as well as openssh. tried the rpms but got
dependancy errors like mad.
