This kind of works... it seems to find the modem and then fails to connect
with:

Mar 26 10:52:30 Conce pppd[669]: This system lacks kernel support for PPP.
This could be because the PPP kernel module could not be loaded, or because
PPP was not included in the kernel configuration. If PPP was included as a
module, try `/sbin/modprobe -v ppp'.

I don't have a ppp module. I tried to modprobe pppox and pppoe (I don't know
what they are) but it doesn't work. Perhaps I should now upgrade ppp?
