I was having some network trouble on my iBook after installing YDL CS 1.2,
so I browsed the recent archives, and saw this message from Andrew Diller
(dillera@isc.upenn.edu):

AD> Here are the issues that I know about with Cs 1.2 and the ibook:
[* snip *]
AD> - ethernet
AD> - ibook uses a new ethernet chip that is buggy with the current crop of
AD> kernals.
AD> - Mol ethernet does _not_ work
AD> - ethernet is super slow
AD> - ethernet has problems (I can't ftp or scp files - wget works sometimes)
AD> wget uses http to retreive files. It works sometimes- ftp and scp fail all
AD> the
AD> time for me. How do they fail?
AD> - slow
AD> - transfers till the last byte then sits and times out
AD> - if it does complete the xfer, the file is corrupt (tar complains)

I've encountered the same problems. In particular, if I do 'ping ibookhost'
from another system, I get 5 - 10% packet loss. Ditto if I do 'ping
someotherhost' from the iBook.

If I boot into MacOS, and try the same test, I get 0% packet loss,
suggesting that the problem isn't entirely the hardware.

Is there a workaround or a fix for this, either current or in the works? I
can live with the video problems, but if I can't reliably download files
with scp, I can't effectively use the system. :^(
