The only way I could get Yellow Dog volumes to show up in Macintosh
choosers via netatalk was to add

modprobe appletalk

to the top of the /etc/rc.d/init.d/atalk startup script to force atalkd to
load before afpd.

Hope this helps anybody having similar problems.
