You should also consider SSH, which encrypts the connection between client
and server, and thus protects against eavesdroppers on your network. You can
download and build from source (it's very straightforward), [1], or download
the RPMs if you prefer. [2] Highly, highly recommended. Clients for Mac and
Windows systems are out there too.

[1] ftp://ftp.ssh.com/pub/ssh/ssh-1.2.27.tar.gz
[2] Four RPMs:
      http://ftp.linuxppc.org/contrib/software/Applications/Network/ssh-1.2.27-1.ppc.rpm
      http://ftp.linuxppc.org/contrib/software/Applications/Network/ssh-clients-1.2.27-1.ppc.rpm
      http://ftp.linuxppc.org/contrib/software/Applications/Network/ssh-extras-1.2.27-1.ppc.rpm
      http://ftp.linuxppc.org/contrib/software/System%20Environment/Daemons/ssh-server-1.2.27-7a_us_riggs.ppc.rpm
    You probably want all four.
