Don't overlook older books that address Unix, rather than
Linux specifically. In particular,

_The Unix Programming Environment_ (Kernighan & Pike) is a good
introduction to building programs quickly from std Unix utilities.

_The Unix System V Environment_ (Bourne) is denser and perhaps a
good reference.

_Advanced Unix Programming_ (Rochkind) is an explanation of Unix
system calls. If you're curious about how the kernel works, this
is a good introduction, even if you're not going to do any C
programming.

There are detail differences between the systems described in
these books and current Linux, but they're still 90+% applicable
to Linux.
