I got this from Jim Cole and it worked for me on my G3 tower.

Are you sure you have the sound module loaded? Have you done the
following..

Add 'alias sound dmasound' to your /etc/conf.modules file and reboot?

Or just a one time shot with /sbin/modprobe dmasound
