Hi I have been attempting to set up X acceleration on my starmax off
and on for the past few days. I have run into a brick wall with X.
When I uncheck the "no accel" box in BootX (using kernel arg atyfb=
vmode:17,cmode:16) the terminal looks ok but the text is a different
color. I then run Xconfigurator to get the basic setup for my
card (mach64 VT chip onboard). I choose the best settings for my
monitor 30-55KHz H, 50-110Hz V. and setup my fav modes.

I then edit XF86Config to eliminate modes I dont use and adjust the
H/V rates to the above. Regardless of what I do, when I try to use X
in 16 bit mode (set in XF86Config) I get funky psychadelic screen colors
and when I quit X it I get the error message:

mach64CreateGC: unsupported depth: 16. Using cfbCreateGC instead.

Using valkyriefb && has no effect other than to make all text nearly
undreadable (the only plus is that the startup penguin displays
correctly).

Choosing alternate resolutions has no effect. Using 8 bit does work,
however, the text gets that unreadable look and the mouse leaves
trails on the screen. Using a depth of 15 instead of 16 X will not
start.

I have tried Xpmac which supposedly has mach 64 support and it hung
during X startup.

Here is my setup:
Starmax 4200
48 Meg RAM 96 Meg Swap
YDL CS 1.1
kernel 2.2.15pre19
XFree86 3.3.3
ATI Mach64 VT (valkyrie) chip on motherboard. 2 Meg VRAM

Unaccelerated X is ok but it is bad enough that I edit long files
with BBEdit and transfer them to my linux box. The accelerated X works
fine with the psychadelic colors exception....scrolling and moving
windows is great! Coming from a mac background I cant bring myself to
use X with those messed up colors. I have checked the archives and
NJolly's website and found several references to this problem with no
solutions. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Scott
