Hi,

Thanks for the responses, but let me just take a quick sec to clarify
my situation. As for the PPP stuff, I have run through the howto (although
not in months), and have been unable to determine what is going wrong. I
do appear to be getting an IP address, so my instinct tells me that there
is something wrong with the routing. In terms of this I will probably just
wait until later in the week, install YDL 2.0, and then try again from
scratch. I posted to the list a while back and got some of the same tips,
but I still had no luck. I'll let you know if I have better luck after a
re-install (or I'll come begging for help...with debug info!)

As for the network, I was able to get eth0 up and running last night (I
guess that wasnb't clear from my email). I was able to successfully talk
to a G3 laptop across a crossover cable, and even telnetted in ;) My
frustration stemmed from the fact that I initially spent time trying to
debug why my builtin ethernet was not getting set up correctly through
linuxconf. As I was searching for any resources online I came across a
mailing list post about using netconfig instead of linuxconf. This worked
like a charm...however, my first impulse was to use linuxconf, and I
didn't realize this would be a problem. What would be useful would be a
comprehensive (hehe) list of utilities that are recommended for setting up
different services and devices. For example, now that I am debugging PPP,
I don't know what the best tools to use are. I've heard some people swear
by the RedHat PPP software, but there is also KDE software. And in terms
of debugging the routes stufff, should I use the route command-line
utility or go with the graphical netcfg? I don't know enough about how
these things play well together, so I am afraid I will end up fouling up
all my PPP config files. The man files for many utilities are great, but
that still requires knowing which utilities are available and appropriate.

Sorry to write so much, but hopefully this will make my situation a
little clearer.

Thanks again,
Mike
