I guess you need to state EXACTLY what you changed whilst trying to
configure the printer. I can't think of a reason why a straightforward
printer install would create the problem you've mentioned.

Aloha Iain,

I didn't change anything ... didn't even try to set it up. There was no reason the printer should work since I didn't do anything, during the install or
afterwards, to set it up. Linux froze up when I tried to print a page ... which is why I suggested maybe an (user) error trap was needed when a user tried to
print a page without having a printer setup.

The only changes I made was to certain desktop values in KDE like colors, power managerment, screen saver, etc.
