hello

iMac DV SE (1999)
2.4.0-test10
X 3.3.6 -> 4.01

I followed the instructions for downloading, compiling, and installing X
4.01. (You can find them at the imaclinux and the linuxppc.org sites.
They agreed on the basics.) The compile was relatively swift (2 hours?)
and aside from a few warnings and errors, which did not halt it,
terminated in a way that made me confident it would work. I followed
the advice given by AArthur and backed up X 3.3.6 into a new directory,
X11R6.3. The installation of X 4 went fine.
        So! When I took a deep breath and typed startx at the console, I was
surprised to hear that the symbolic link, @X, in the /etc/X11 directory,
was not pointing at anything. I did a search through the documentation
and through the articles: apparently this problem doesn't crop up often,
and I couldn't find an answer. I pulled out X 336 out of cryogenic
hibernation, put the old XF86Config in place, fired X up, but it balked;
I ran XConfigurator again, knowing that now it was back on the PATH, and
it gave me the nyah-nyah-nyah infamous font error message. Fine. I
commented out the unix :-1 line in XF86Config and booted it up again . .
. and it took me into X Window. I like X Window, it's rather spartan,
but I can't get along without KDE; I just don't know that many
commands. Would someone please tell me what happened and how I can
finish the installation of X 4.01? I'd be very grateful.

peace

philippe
