Last time I saw this was because I didn't have enough disk space on my
machine.
The Font server seems to allocate a huge chunk of disk space for fonts.

It may also be that you haven't installed all the fonts. If you did a
custom install, this may have happened.
If you did a full install, I don't know. The default settings for the font
stuff worked for me.

Have you been able to get the startx running at all? My default ydl install
for the x window stuff didn't run first shot.
It may be that you haven't configured the XF86Config properly for your
particular monitor yet. Especially observe the horiz rate and vertical rate
for the different screen resolutions. I needed to change the settings for
this for even the standard apple 17" multi-scan display.
