Woaa that's a lot of questions....

Well lesstif was a public domain substitute for Motif which is basically
the 2D graphics manager for unix systems (there are others too). Unfortunately
Motif was not public domain until a few month so we had to stick with lesstif
that did a nice job anyway but you could get a few bugs in certain cases
(zero sized windows...) using lesstif with software which were baiscally
written for Motif.
Now that Motif is public domain it will probably make lesstif useless and
you can bet lesstif might disappear in futur linux releases.
     
Xfree takes care of the hardware side of the graphics and getting the
latest version installed is rather a good idea, in one word: upgrade
to 4.0 or 4.0.1.

You will have to choose between lesstif and motif though as they can't
co-exist.
