after a tiny bit of experimentation, i found that

append="video=aty128fb:vmode:16:cmode:24 hdb=cdrom hdb=noautotune"

when added to the other configurations in yaboot.conf, provides 24-bit
color without shaving off a sliver on the left of the console, as
vmode:17 sometimes does.
