Subject: Remapping X Keys

After spending some time fiddling around, I have come to the
conclusion that I need to manually remap the keyboard configuration
in X to make it work correctly...what is the best way to go about
doing this? I found a file that assigns integers between 8 and 128
to what appeared to be keyboard key positions organized by row;
presumably I have to switch those values around. Is there any way of
knowing what each value corresponds to (some keymap file the text
interface uses that employs those values)?
