Does your ISP guarantee a static IP address? Or do yo get a few?

Things to check. Is the gateway set up correctly? It should be the IP
address of the DSL modem. How about your routing tables. If you're
configuring statically you may have to set up your routes to match.

You can check your routing table with route -n (as root). The man page is
fairly helpful, but feel free to ask me if you get stuck. I've been playing
with these for a while, I think I've got the hang of it now!

What is your network structure? Is it like this.

DSL Modem (router) ------------- Pismo YDL
IP address aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd IP Address aaa.bbb.ccc.eee

One last thing. Why do you want to stop using DHCP? If you're not running
as a server DHCP is perfect, and even if you are, so long as it always
gives you the same IP address it's great. My webserver gets it's IP address
from my DSL modem using DHCP. The modem only has one IP address it can
allocate so it's not a problem. That way if DNS servers move my webserver
will automatically get that info. Otherwise I'd have to tell it manually.

Hope that helps

Pete
