Philippe,

It worked like a charm! You're right, the '-bpp 24' argument to startx is
unnecessary. Also, I did have to remove the 'novideo' argument from
yaboot.conf. Thanks.

You may find reason to try this XF86Config with X Window 3.3.6. It
gives me 24-bit (default) color at an 800x600 resolution; you may be
able to hack 16-bit color out of it. For 24-bit color I use (perhaps
unnecessarily) the command

startx -- -bpp 24

ad also add the argument

append="video=aty128fb:vmode:16,cmode:24"

to the other arguments I use (image=hd:8,\\\\vmlinux etc.) in the
yaboot.conf file.
