Thanks for the help. After much messing around with configuration files, I
needed to re-install YDL and found that after doing so, eth0 worked
flawlessly!

In the re-install, I opted for a fixed IP address (rather than DHCP the
first time) and entered a fully-qualified machine name. Could either or
both of these have been the soulution to the problem, I wonder?

I am planning to re-install once more, after I figure out all the
application configurations (Samba the the moment!), so I'll try doing that
with my Farallon card installed and see if that works also.
