I cannot answer your question, but I had a similar one a month ago,
that no one answered:

In my case, the connection was refused by the server because "the
maximum number of clients" was reached. I still don't have a soln to
this, except to restart X.

I do note the same thing, though. If, after my 'limit' has been
reached, I try to do something like 'make xconfig', the error
prevents me from proceeding. I haven't figured out yet if there is
some simple X config parameter I need to set, or whether it is
something deeper...
